Why Climate-Smart Agriculture Is the Key to Uganda’s Food Security
October 28, 2025

Introduction

Across Uganda, farmers face a growing challenge — the rising cost of livestock feed. As feed prices soar, profit margins shrink, making it difficult for smallholder farmers to sustain their herds. But what if the solution lies in the waste we throw away?

Transforming Waste into Opportunity

At Gima Agribusiness, we are developing an innovative solution under the Uganda Climate Innovation Fund (UCIF) that turns agricultural waste and crop residues into nutritious, affordable livestock feed.
By using plant-based materials like maize stalks, bean husks, and cassava peels, we’re reducing waste and providing farmers with a low-cost alternative to conventional feeds.

The Benefits

  • Lower production costs: Farmers spend less on commercial feeds.

  • Environmental protection: Reduces pollution and promotes recycling.

  • Improved livestock health: Balanced nutrition enhances animal growth and productivity.

  • Climate resilience: Encourages sustainable farming practices that reduce carbon emissions.

A Greener, More Profitable Future

This innovation aligns with our broader mission to promote climate-smart agriculture, create green jobs, and improve food security.
By turning waste into wealth, Gima Agribusiness is proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.
